During the “Ashamed No More” event many of the Mixtecos from Guerrero, Mexico and from the community of Tonyville came together to enjoy some authentic and traditional food made by the mixteca women of Guerrero, Mexico.
The “Ashamed No More” or as translated in Spanish “No Mas Bajo Las Sombras” event took place Saturday, April 4, 2015. During this event many individuals came to not only learn, but also to have a taste of some of the many traditional dishes of the Mixtecos from Guerrero. Dishes, such as mole, pozole, memelas, pequaditas, tamales, caldo de res and atole agrio to name a few.
This event was not only an opportunity for individuals to learn about who the Mixtecos from Guerrero are, but it was also an opportunity for the community to come together and organize. Allowing the Mixtecos from the community of Tonyville to come together and feel at home, with some chilena music playing in the background while at the same time eating totopos or some memelas really made them feel like back home. I believe that such event is only the beginning of many more to come.
I now know how much my community desires to have an opportunity to show our traditions and cultures without feeling ashamed or embarrassed to express who we are, where we come from, or what we eat. This event truly open doors for the people of my pueblo to be expose without fear or embarrassment. I believe that the people who came to the event enjoyed the event and food just as much as I and the members of my community did.
